Great Britain 2024 one oz Gold Britannia
The British Britannia is one of the world’s most recognizable gold coins. Britannias have been minted in gold since 1987 (silver coins debuted in 1997; platinum joined the party in 2018). The gold coin featured here is struck in 999.9 pure gold by the British Royal Mint at their refinery in Llantrisant, South Wales.

In addition to its gorgeous design, the Britannia incorporates cutting edge security features such as micro text, tincture lines and surface animation.

Obverse: features the first effigy of King Charles III created by renowned British sculptor Martin Jennings. In keeping with tradition, The King’s portrait faces to the left, the opposite direction to Queen Elizabeth II. The coin features the Latin inscription CHARLES III–D–G– REX–F–D–100 POUNDS arranged in a circle around the bust of His Majesty. For those who, like me, don’t speak a whole lot of Latin, this translates to “Charles III, by the Grace of God, King, Defender of the Faith”.

Reverse: depicts Britannia in profile wearing a helmet with a lion emblem, facing towards a wave and the inscription BRITANNIA-2024-1 OZ-999.9-FINE-GOLD. The image was designed by Marie-Alice Harel, a French illustrator based in Glasgow, Scotland. Fun fact: Ms. Harel holds a PhD in geosciences! She strove “to imagine Britannia as a benevolent and peaceful protector, someone one could trust and turn to in challenging times… I wanted to represent Britannia as quite young in some of the designs to address the younger generations who are the future of the country. They will need those ideas of strength, peace and resilience to solve the problems of health, society and environment that we experience today…Even though the idea of strength is central to the character, I did my best to show that this power is rooted in kindness, compassion and peace. For me, that’s where true power lies and is what we need more of in the world… This is why I was especially inspired by the symbol of the sea (to me, a reminder of environmental protection and climate change) and the presence of animals around Britannia (the symbolic lion)”.
