Description
The American Gold Eagle 1/10 oz is a 22k (.9167 fine), U.S. Gold coin. Containing 1/10 troy oz. of gold, the 1/10 oz Gold Eagle bears a nominal face value of $5.
Minted at the US Mint in West Point, N.Y. since 1986, the American Gold Eagle features a design based on America’s most iconic coin, the Saint-Gaudens “Double Eagle”.
The obverse depicts Lady Liberty, with her flowing hair, walking against a backdrop of the sun’s rays. She holds the torch of freedom in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. At the top of coin is the word LIBERTY. To her left (our right), towards the bottom, is the date. At the lower left is the US Capitol building. The coin is ringed by 50 stars, representing the 50 states.
The reverse, from 1986 to the first half of 2021 was designed by sculptor Miley Busiek. It featured a male American Bald Eagle, carrying an olive branch, flying above a nest containing a waiting female eagle and her hatchlings. In July of 2021, to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Gold Eagle, the US Mint has issued a new reverse designed by Artistic Infusion Program (AIP) artist Jennie Norris. The new design features a close-up profile of the head of a bald eagle facing left surrounded by statutory inscriptions above it for UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM AND IN GOD WE TRUST. Those inscriptions are separated by three stars on each side of the eagle, and below them appear “5 DOLLARS,” and 1/10 OZ FINE GOLD. ”The new “Type 2” Eagles have been updated with enhanced security features, including a reeded edge variation.
