Description

Peace Dollars VG (very good) – one hundred (100) coins
Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the Peace Dollar was issued in 1921 to commemorate the peace following World War I. The obverse depicts a left facing profile of Liberty, the word LIBERTY around the rim above her radiating crown, IN GOD WE TRUST horizontally and the date at the bottom. The reverse features a perched American bald eagle with an olive branch in its talons, the word PEACE below its perch; above its head UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DOLLAR horizontally across the coin just below the eagle’s body.
Fun facts:
– When the Peace Dollar was originally designed, the coin featured a broken sword. Many believed that the sword was illustrative of defeat and disgrace. An opinion piece in the New York Herald ran a scathing editorial against the new design, stating, “If the artist had sheathed the blade or blunted it there could be no objection. Sheathing is symbolic of peace, of course; the blunted sword implies mercy. But a broken sword carries with it only unpleasant associations”. The Mint hastily acted to remove it.
– The US Mint in Denver struck over 316,000 Peace Dollars in 1964, but they were never issued. All are believed to have been melted.
– I carried a 1925 Peace in the coin pocket of my jeans every day for many years. True story.

By 1928, production of the Peace Dollar had stopped, reissuing again in 1934 and 1935.
