Happy Saturday,

Last Friday, I used the word “stability” (with a question mark at the end) to describe the market. This week I can remove that question mark – the market IS stable, so much so that it finished almost identically to where it ended last week. Not sure I’ve ever seen this before, but it gives me some confidence (something my Yankees need a little more of!).

Nice trick slipping a baseball comment in there, but enough about baseball – let’s get to our weekend specials.

Who’s looking for some back date Silver Eagles? Interesting change in the market lately. I see that premiums have (mercifully) come down on sealed 2010-2016 boxes, while boxes from before 2010 have all but disappeared from the dealer-to-dealer market. The highest retail prices we’re seeing are on 2011-2013 Eagles so let’s feature those at the new lower premiums – and still beat our biggest competitor by $500 per U.S. Mint-sealed box.

Speaking of beating our competition by a buck an ounce on one oz. silver coins, we have around 800 one oz silver Engelhard Prospectors that are ready to ship in lots of 100.

No, it’s not about Area 51.

I’ve had a love/hate with proof coins for many years. The modern ones, all pristine and mirror-like, are extraordinary looking. Love them! But I’ve always had the impression that the older coins haven’t aged well – they can get dark or blotchy and, frankly, rather unattractive. I’ve had (what turns out to be) an unfair prejudice against them so I usually skip right past them when looking at coins to buy.

Until now.

I was looking at some classic coins this week and, for whatever reason, decided to check out some of the proofs. While I did indeed find some very ugly old coins, I also discovered quite a few absolute gems. I’ll share these beauties with you a little later in the newsletter. Hope you like them as much as I do.

Metals have continued their upward trend – silver, platinum and palladium anyway. Gold was very slightly down for the week (about 0.5%). Gold is now up 20% since last October, while silver has increased by 18% since its bottom in mid-November. Platinum is up 11% since February 14th! Great trends.

This week, as we’ve reflected on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing (again, not an Area 51 reference. HAHAHA), we are excited to feature one of the coolest coins we’ve ever seen, a coin that contains SPACE GOLD – gold that was delivered by Space Shuttle Challenger to the Int’l Space Station, where it “lived” for nearly six years, travelling over 625 million miles around the earth! And yes, this amazing coin has a PROOF finish.

SPACE GOLD!

In the mid-1980s, NASA sent six large plates of 24-karat gold into space aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. The gold, along with other types of metal, was installed on the outside of the International Space Station to measure the effects of exposure to the severe conditions of outer space. This “space gold” remained in orbit for over 5 1/2 years in outer space, travelling more than 625 million miles around the earth

In the early ’90s, NASA brought the gold back to earth, where it was studied for over 25 years. The gold was never intended to be made available to collectors, but in 2015, the plates were brought to auction by the government and a U.S. coin dealer secured the gold and then partnered with the China Mint to create the limited edition 2015 Moon Festival Panda Bi-Metallic (Silver & Gold) Proof.

Total mintage was a scant 2,000.

Each of these ultra rare commemorative proofs is a massive 100 mm diameter (nearly 4″ wide) and contains one kilo (2.2 pounds) of 99.9% pure silver accented with 1/10 ounce of 24-karat “space gold”.

The coins offered today have been certified, graded and encapsulated by NGC.

A decent little rebound for silver and gold this week. Hopefully, the previous week or two were just a mini-correction and now we can get back to seeing some continued positive results.

I was thinking a lot about France this morning, going through my pictures of Notre Dame and Normandy, and then through the door comes a lot of old French 20 francs goldpieces. Now, we’ve sold plenty of twenty francs over the years (I love ’em), but I don’t recall ever seeing any certified before. How weird is that? Coincidence?

Each of these 19th century gems contain .1867 oz of gold, a total of 1.12 oz for the lot of six. I began researching the values, starting with the 1851-A, and I found this list:

Another good week for metals. Not what you’d call skyrocketing, but I hear that slow and steady wins the race. After taking a hit early, by week’s end all losses have been recovered and then some. At today’s close, the net for the week was up!

In the bigger picture, Gold and Silver are running nearly 9% higher than their respective bottom prices last autumn. Platinum is up 15% in the past 6 weeks and Palladium, which plummeted just a few weeks ago, has recovered most of its losses and is looking spry again, up $42 since last Friday’s close. Good looking trends!

The amazing response to last week’s New Orleans mint Barber quarter got me thinking about O-mint Barbers. I’ve scoured the market this week to come up with another couple of beauties, a 1893-O Barber half dollar and a 1901-O Barber dime. Beautiful, white coins (and definitely priced to sell!). We’re also very excited to offer you a lovely, sparkly, 1900 $2.50 Gold Liberty and a super rare 1893-S $10 Liberty (looks amazing too!)

JUST IN: file under: what the heck?!

Remember those Apollo 11 five oz silver proofs that the Mint sold a couple of months back? The ones that sold out in 8 minutes? Well, during those eight minutes, an order I was personally trying to place got booted when the Mint’s ordering system froze. Boy, was I mad! Guess what? Last week (two months down the road), the Mint send me an email that said, “Your order has shipped”.

Huh? What order?

The coins just showed up!
